1.  THE ANATOMY OF SARCASM
by David Granirer © 2000

Sarcasm can be very funny, but not when youíre on the receiving end.
Yet I think many of us use sarcasm without even being aware of it.
And letís face it, the term sarcasm is pretty vague, so Iíll start by
defining it.

Our communication takes place on three levels. Content,
the actual words we use, accounts for 7-10% of the impact of our
communication. Voice tone accounts for 30-40%, and body language
accounts for 50-60%. Thus approximately 90% of the impact of our
communication is non-verbal.

Sarcasm is when our words say one thing and our voice tone and body
language say another. The words "Way to go," when spoken in a soft,
supportive tone of voice accompanied by open body language, are
experienced by most people as a compliment. These same words,
spoken in a harsh, angry tone accompanied by closed body
language, will be experienced as a put-down.

Sarcasm can be quite amusing when it is part of a comicís attitude
during a performance. Think of Dennis Miller or Chris Rock. It can
also be amusing when weíre venting frustration at things like the
weather, bureaucracy, etc. In these cases it provides a release valve.

But sarcasm loses its amusement value when you direct it at the individual
to whom you are talking. Personally, Iíd hate to be on the receiving end
of a Dennis Miller rant.

So the idea here is not to eliminate sarcasm, but to be conscious of
when and how we use it.

3. WHAT'S GOOD STORIES

It's so easy to see all the bad things around us, that sometimes we forget about all the great things that go on. And we need to hear about good things because that gives us hope and inspires us to go out and do more good things.

In this section, I want to hear from you. What's happened in your life that's good? What things have people done that inspire you to be kind to others? What funny things have happened?

Email your short stories to me at david@psychocomic.com, and if I publish yours, you get a free copy of my tape "I'm OK But YOU Need Professional Help!"

4. AN OPPORTUNITY TO HELP

The Vancouver Crisis Center needs volunteers.

If you want to help people while learning crisis intervention and listening skills call them at (604) 872-1811 or go to www.crisiscentre.bc.ca. They're a fabulous organization with great people and lots of support for the volunteers. Of course I'm biased since I worked there for about 14 years and am co-facilitating their January training group.

If anyone has a good cause they'd like to promote please email me at david@psychocomic.com
